　　某人在屋檐下躲雨，看見觀音正撐傘走過。這人說：“觀音菩薩，普度一下衆生吧，帶我一段如何?”觀音說：“我在雨裏，你在檐下，而檐下無雨，你不需要我度。”這人立刻跳出檐下，站在雨中：“現在我也在雨中了，該度我了吧?”觀音說：“你在雨中，我也在雨中，我不被淋，因爲有傘;你被雨淋，因爲無傘。所以不是我度自己，而是傘度我。你要想度，不必找我，請自找傘去!”說完便走了。第二天，這人遇到了難事，便去寺廟裏求觀音。走進廟裏，才發現觀音的像前也有一個人在拜，那個人長得和觀音一模一樣，絲毫不差。這人問：“你是觀音嗎?”那人答道：“我正是觀音。”這人又問：“那你爲何還拜自己?”觀音笑道：“我也遇到了難事，但我知道，求人不如求己。”
